Are you signed up on LinkedIn?
If not, you should be. According to expert sources, if you are looking for a job, this site will help you find relevant contacts....but they suggest you send a personal message to the right contacts instead of waiting for a hiring manager to contact you. They also suggest that free accounts do not work as well if you use the 'looking for a job' badge on your profile.
In either case, it is a way to connect with hundreds, even thousands of people who at some point in your life could be helpful to your career. It's very popular in the United States, and equally popular worldwide. Their groups, which you can join, provide great forums to discuss key issues that may be of interest to you.
How to begin....
Go to LinkedIn.com and set up a free account. Make sure you complete each section thoughtfully. After you are finished, begin searching for friends who are already members and invite them to be connections. It's that easy!
CHECK YOUR SPELLING AND ENGLISH GRAMMAR
Time and time again, I notice grammatical errors in information sections completed by people. This is a professional site, so these errors reflect poorly on the person - rendering the writer as unfamiliar with proper English or having poor editing skills. If English is your second language, either have someone who is more fluent in English review your entries or copy and paste them into a word processing document that will highlight the errors and allow you to correct them.

AND ONCE YOUR ACCOUNT IS SET UP
Visit it often to 'like' status changes made by others and to make even more connections. This site is constantly changing, adding more features allowing people to connect. One of the best new features is the 'endorsement' section where people can 'endorse' your skills. List some skills you consider yourself an expert, and watch as connections add their support. Not only does it make you feel really good that others are aware that you are competent but it shows people who may be looking to hire you that you may be a perfect fit for a job opening.
